The natural resources of Carpinteria Marsh: their status and future
The purpose of this report is: 1) to document the natural resources of Carpinteria Marsh, 2) outline the uses those resources receive, 3) enumerate the problems and conflicts of use that affect those resources, and 4) recommend measures that will protect and enhance the marsh and its resources. It is intended as a guide for citizens, planners and administrators of all private and public entities interested in the status and future of the marsh.
This report has been prepared under contract to and fully funded by the Office of Biological Services of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The goals and purpose of this federal office are to review the impact on fish and wildlife resources of land, mineral and water development practices, such as offshore oil and gas exploration, development and
production; construction of inshore pipeline canals and refineries; power plant construction/operation and urban development. This report, and five other southern California reports, covering Agua Hedionda (San Diego County), Anaheim Bay-Huntington Harbor (Orange County), Mugu Lagoon

Exploratory analyses of crime-scene characteristics in cyber-related homicides
Despite the alarming nature of homicides in which the offender meets the victim online, or cyber-initiated homicides, little empirical attention has been devoted to this phenomenon.
The present study was designed to explore the behavioral patterns found prior to and during a cyber-initiated homicide event. Data on 61 homicide cases from various countries were collected through news media and legal sources. Smallest space analysis revealed that cyber
homicides were characterized by four distinct themes: Excessive violence; fatal escalation; crime-related incidents; and predatory behavior. Implications of the findings and avenues for future research are discussed
Three-Dimensional Simulations of Solar and Stellar Dynamos: The Influence of a Tachocline
We review recent advances in modeling global-scale convection and dynamo
processes with the Anelastic Spherical Harmonic (ASH) code. In particular, we
have recently achieved the first global-scale solar convection simulations that
exhibit turbulent pumping of magnetic flux into a simulated tachocline and the
subsequent organization and amplification of toroidal field structures by
rotational shear. The presence of a tachocline not only promotes the generation
of mean toroidal flux, but it also enhances and stabilizes the mean poloidal
field throughout the convection zone, promoting dipolar structure with less
frequent polarity reversals. The magnetic field generated by a convective
dynamo with a tachocline and overshoot region is also more helical overall,
with a sign reversal in the northern and southern hemispheres. Toroidal
tachocline fields exhibit little indication of magnetic buoyancy instabilities

Convection forced by a descending dry layer and low-level moist convergence
This is the post-print version of the Article - Copyright @ 2009 Wiley-BlackwellA narrow line of convective showers was observed over southern England on 18 July 2005 during the Convective Storm Initiation Project (CSIP). The showers formed behind a cold front (CF), beneath two apparently descending dry layers (i.e. sloping so that they descended relative to the instruments observing them). The lowermost dry layer was associated with a tropopause fold from a depression, which formed 2 d earlier from a breaking Rossby wave, located northwest of the UK. The uppermost dry layer had fragmented from the original streamer due to rotation around the depression (This rotation was also responsible for the observations of apparent descent—ascent would otherwise be seen behind a CF). The lowermost dry layer descended over the UK and overran higher θw air beneath it, resulting in potential instability. Combined with a surface convergence line (which triggered the convection but had less impact on the convective available potential energy than the potential instability), convection was forced up to 5.5 km where the uppermost dry layer capped it. The period when convection was possible was very short, thus explaining the narrowness of the shower band. Convective Storm Initiation Project observations and model data are presented to illustrate the unique processes in this case.This work is partly funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)
